55 Flowery Hens
Kind of a confusing name, wouldn’t you say? In Sweden, where they originated, the breed is called Fiftyfive Flowery Guld (Gold). Pastor and chicken geneticist, Martin Silverrudd, created this breed in 1955, hence the 55 in the name. They’re called Flowery Hens due to the pretty speckled feathers on the hens that resemble flowers. The males are white with flecks of silver and gold. Although the breed comes in both silver and gold, we choose to specialize in the gold coloration of this breed.
A Leghorn of a different color?
If you’re familiar with the Leghorn breed, you’ll notice that 55 Flowery Hens look like Leghorns, only a different color. This is because Martin Silverrudd crossed White Leghorns with Brown Leghorns and selectively bred them to bring out the colors and patterns hidden under the dominant white and to be autosexing, meaning you can tell males from females at hatch.
Superb egg production.
Like their Leghorn cousins, 55 Flowery Hens are superb layers of large to extra large white eggs. 55 Flowery Hens are active birds who are smaller in body, which is great for those who would like a better feed to production ratio.
Autosexing chicks
One of the best things about 55 Flowery Hens is that they are an autosexing breed. This means that you can easily tell males from females at hatch based on the down color of the chick. Males are much lighter than females and have a light dot on their heads. Females are darker shades of brown with a brown V on the head.
